Urban B-boys teach swagger to suburban kids By
Angie Anaya Borgedalen
They teach kids — and some
adults, too — how to swagger, how to spin on their heads or balance on one hand without toppling over, how to freeze
on command and how to strut.
But most of all, a team of twenty-something, hip hop instructors from the Kansas City
area teach their students how to be cool.
Choreographer Jeremy “J-Wreck” Finney and his dance crew,
Adonus “.50 caliber” Ray, Joshua “Talent” Romero and Albert “Al-burnz” Burnes teach hip-hop
and break-dancing classes at Dance Line Image in Liberty. As professional dancers, the guys call themselves Tiger Style!
“We’re kind of like a circus,” Finney said. “We’re very goofy. We have very different
personalities.”
As teachers, they’re a hit.
Eleven-year-old Megan Roberts of Kearney has
been taking dance lessons since she was three and perfecting her hip hop moves for the last two years. She’s not hesitant
to jump in the middle of the break-dance circle and show off her B-girl footwork.
“It’s fun,”
Megan said. “And they’re cool.”
Although the athletic foursome had been performing and competing
in various dance contests around town and elsewhere they didn’t get together as a crew until last year. Ray and Burnes,
though, have been friends since high school.
“We met Jeremy last year at a competition at the Legends, and
he said he had an idea to put together a crew,” Ray said.
“We thought it was really stupid at first
— a crew of guys who liked to dance and have fun,” Burnes interjected.
Now they’re scheduled
to perform at the University of Missouri-Kansas City next month.
And they opened for MTV’s “America’s
Best Dance Crew” when the production was auditioning dancers at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City Oct. 6.
“The producers actually called Jeremy and requested them,” said Wendy Wills, owner of Dance Line Image. “They’re
awesome.”
Wills said “America’s Best Dance Crew” is a highly watched dance competition,
somewhat like “American Idol.” Randy Jackson, a judge on “Idol,” is executive producer of the reality
TV dance show.
Finney said they considered trying out for season three of the show but were uncertain if they would
be able to devote months of time to it.
Ray, 25, has a day job at a facility for at-risk youngsters in Kansas City.
Finney, 25, is a professional choreographer, dance teacher and performer. Burnes, 27, is an actor, dancer and stand-up comic.
The three were teaching at the dance studio last week.
“Josh is one of the best B-boys in the world. He really
loves the kids,”
said Finney about his fourth crewmember.
Tyler Wills, 12, of Liberty has been
taking dance lessons from Finney for two years.
“I like it,” Tyler said. “It’s fun and
it helps make you stronger.”
His mother said the studio offers hip hop for boys, girls and adults as well
as a variety of other dance classes. She said ages of students ranged from 8 to the 40s. Wills recently opened a new Dance
Line Image in Plattsburg.
“It’s hard to keep boys happy, but they seem to love it,” she said.
“But they have to listen to the teachers and follow instructions.”
